Master Thesis: Evaluating Non-Magnetic Armoring Solution for Submarine Dynamic cables to Enable the Green Energy Transition

Driven by society’s need to tackle climate change, renewable energy generation continues to grow. To reach out for new natural resources, such as wind, wind farms are now more often being installed offshore at sea, further off the coast. In such places, winds blow with much greater force and more frequently than on land. High voltage (HV) submarine cables are essential elements in the power collection and transmission from offshore wind farms to the shore, thus playing a central role in the renewable energy transition.

These cables are characterized by high fatigue endurance to withstand the harsh loading conditions in the sea. One of the critical components in the construction of dynamic submarine cables is the armoring, which provides mechanical protection and ensures cable integrity under severe marine conditions. Marine salt water is a corrosive environment and corrosion must be considered seriously when designing submarine power cable. In most case the armoring is made of mild steel, which is a magnetic material that concentrates the magnetic field around the conductor generating unwanted losses and extra heat in AC submarine cables.
The focus of this thesis is to identify and evaluate an alternative material for armoring submarine dynamic cables that is non-magnetic, robust, and resistant to fatigue and corrosion.

Thesis Description
This thesis work will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Oxford and the University of Leicester. The purpose of the work is to evaluate and optimize the selection of non-magnetic armoring material for dynamic submarine cable armor, focusing on corrosion resistance and fatigue performance.
The main activities can be summarized as follows:
•    Conducting a literature survey to investigate the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in seawater of candidate materials.
•    Employing /developing a finite element model to evaluate the impact of corrosion on fatigue performance.
•    Comparing the simulation results against in-house experimental results.
•    Writing a final report summarizing methods and finding.

Qualifications and Requirements
The required qualifications are:
•    Master student in Solid Mechanics, Material Science, Engineering Mechanics, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Physics, or any related field.
•    Good knowledge of solid mechanics, material science, and finite element method (FEM).
•    Experience in using FEA commercial software, e.g., Abaqus.
•    Proficient in both verbal and written English communication.
