Development of test cell and test procedure for electrical testing of cylindrical rubber samples

We are looking for positive and enthusiastic students who wants to perform their master thesis work within the field of material/high voltage engineering. The topic of this thesis is to design a test setup for measuring electrical properties as a function of temperature, electric field and expansion rate for cylindrical test objects

NKT is a major player in the area of HVAC and HVDC cable systems, and the need of energy transmission from the source of energy production, e.g. wind farms, over long distances is ever increasing. At NKT in Alingsås, we are developing and producing cable accessories, i.e. joints and terminations for both HVAC and HVDC. One aim of NKT is to be in the forefront of the development of accessories for even higher DC power transmission, with e.g. increased voltage levels and higher currents leading to higher conductor temperatures.

The thesis work contains both practical and theoretical elements, where the majority of the work will comprise of designing test cells for cylindrical test objects with different dimensions. The impact of different expansion rates of tubes will be studied on different electrical properties such as DC conductivity, permittivity and dielectric loss factor. The work includes literature study, design of test cells using CAD, electrothermal simulations using COMSOL and experimental work.

The main part of the thesis work will be performed at our site in Alingsås. Some work such as literature studies and planning by e.g. Design of Experiment tools at Chalmers. Some measurements might be done either at Chalmers or at our research center in Västerås.

The students will receive a reward for their thesis work.
