NKT expands with new test hall and office building at Swedish cable accessories site

Oct 10, 2023

NKT is ready to expand its current production facilities in Alingsås, Sweden. Today the site hosts the ground breaking ceremony for the premises that will enable NKT to meet the future demand from the market for power cable accessories.

NKT Building concept
The demand for power cables and accessories is growing with the transition to renewable energy across societies. They are needed in both interconnectors, offshore and onshore wind parks, solar parks and for the increasing electrification of society. To meet the demand for accessories and to follow the previously announced expansion plans at NKT’s high-voltage factory in Karlskrona, the company is now expanding its current accessories production site in Alingsås. The expansions will included a new test hall designed for testing power cable accessories up to 525 kV, an office building to house the increasing number of employees as well as additional capacity within the existing production.
John Sjöström, Head of Operations at NKT in Alingsås says:
- We are happy to continue to develop our operations in Alingsås. As routine testing is an important part of the production process, the expansion leads to a capacity increase in our production of high-voltage accessories as well as an additional focus on our R&D activities. At the same time, the project will entail growing our site with 40-50 new colleagues.
Power cable accessories form an important part of the many large high-voltage cable system projects that NKT has recently won. John Sjöström continues:
- With the investment in our new test facility for high-voltage products, we continue to meet the strong growth that NKT is experiencing in the global high-voltage market. The investment at our site in Alingsås also means that NKT continues to make the green transition possible by supplying complete cable systems for on- and offshore wind parks and interconnectors.
NKT has received the permit required to start building the new facilities. The investment in the new buildings in Alingsås amounts to EUR 14 million and the buildings are expected to be completed during the first half of 2025. The new buildings that house test facilities and offices will add 2,500 square meters to the current approx.10,700 square meters of NKT buildings in Alingsås.
