The project

Deep in the Baltic Sea, Baltic Power Offshore Windfarm needs a reliable, high voltage connection to the mainland.
By 2030, more than 30% of Poland’s energy will come from renewable sources, mainly offshore wind farms. Leading the way in this transformation, Baltic Power will be Poland’s very first wind farm, harnessing the power of wind in the Baltic Sea.
This strategic infrastructure project will enable the transmission of renewable energy generated by the 130 sqm wind farm back to the mainland. This breakthrough project will support Poland’s transition to a greener future with clean, competitively priced electricity.
Once fully operational, the approx. 1.2 GW capacity, 76-turbine (each with a generating capacity of 15 MW) wind farm will seamlessly deliver clean energy to more than 1.5 million homes across Poland. Ultimately, it will provide 3% of the energy needs of the national power system.
The wind farm is situated 23 kilometres to the north of the Polish coast, near Choczewo and Łeba, where the wind farm’s service port will be built.
Baltic Power needs an AC power cable system solution to connect the new wind farm to the Polish mainland. NKT was awarded the contract for supplying the windfarm with export power cables in 2023. Baltic Power selected NKT due to our extensive experience and proven track record in delivering high-quality submarine cable systems. By selecting NKT, Baltic Power ensured not only a seamless connection for the offshore wind farm, but also a partnership built on trust and confidence in our ability to deliver reliability, efficiency, and superior quality.

The solution

NKT to design and produce 130km of 230 kV power cables for Baltic Power.

NKT is leading a three-party consortium and will supply Baltic Power with both offshore export cables and associated electrical accessories, which will connect the offshore substations to the onshore export cables at the landfall.
130km of cables will be manufactured at NKT’s factory in Cologne, with the supporting accessories delivered from its Alingsas production site in Sweden.
The cable scope will consist of four cable circuits, as well as a HDD Spare cable of around 17km. Transported on NKT’s new barge, the NKT Agrippina, the cables will make the journey onwards, to the Netherlands, where Flexible Installation Joints will be installed at the NKT logistics center in Rotterdam. From there, the cables will load-out to NKT’s consortium partner, DEME, for on-site installation in the Baltic Sea.
NKT will also be responsible for terminations on the offshore platforms and connections to the land cable at the transition joint bays.
Thanks to an early works contract signed in 2023, NKT was able to swiftly begin – and has since completed –  type testing and make preparations at the Cologne factory. In fact, we were able to begin conductor production within just one week of signing the contract.
The cable production commenced June 2023 and will run for the next two years, with the project scheduled for completion in June 2026.
